Shelf — Privacy Policy

Last updated: 19 June 2026

Shelf is a book recommendation app for iPhone (“the App”). This policy explains what the App collects, why, and your choices. The App is operated by an individual developer (“we”, “us”). Contact: shelf.app.privacy@gmail.com.

Who is responsible for your data

Shelf is operated by an individual developer based in the United States, acting as the data controller for the limited data described below. We are not a company.

What we collect

Shelf is designed to use as little personal data as possible. We do not ask you to create an account, and we do not ask for your name, email address, or contacts.

We do not collect your precise location, contacts, photos, health data, financial information, or browsing activity in other apps.

How your data is used

Artificial intelligence and third-party processing

Shelf uses Anthropic’s Claude AI service to generate recommendations. When you use the App, your book taste signals (the books you like and dislike) are sent to Anthropic’s API to produce suggestions. No name, email, account, or personal identity is sent — only book preferences. Anthropic processes this data to return recommendations and under its own terms does not use API inputs to train its models. You can review Anthropic’s privacy practices at anthropic.com/legal/privacy.

The App also retrieves public book information (cover images, titles, descriptions) from the Google Books API and generates shopping links to Amazon. These requests are for book metadata and do not transmit your personal taste data.

Where data is stored

Your taste data and anonymous identifier are stored using Google Cloud (Firestore) on servers operated on our behalf. Data is transmitted over encrypted connections (HTTPS/TLS).

Data sharing

We do not sell your data. We do not share your data with advertisers. We do not use your data to track you across other apps or websites. The only third parties that process data are the service providers described above (Anthropic, Google Cloud, Google Books), each acting to deliver the App’s core functionality and providing protection of the data consistent with this policy.

Your choices and rights

Children

Shelf is not directed at children under 13 and does not knowingly collect data from them. If you believe a child has provided data through the App, contact us and we will delete it.

Data retention

We keep your taste data for as long as you use the App. If you use “Delete my data,” or if you delete and reinstall the App (which generates a new anonymous identifier), the prior data is no longer associated with you and is removed.

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy as the App evolves. Material changes will be reflected by updating the “Last updated” date above.
